Minister meets the Sri Lankan delegation for 8th Belt and Road Teenager Maker Camp & Teacher workshop

The delegation participating in the 8th Belt and Road Teenager Maker Camp & Teacher Workshop received their nomination letters from the Hon. Minister of Education, Dr. Susil Premajantha on 15th July 2024 at his Office in Sausiripaya, Baththaramulla. Dr Sepalika Sudasinghe, Director General of the NSF, Dr Jayantha Wattavidanage, Chairman of the NSF Working Committee on Science Popularization and Dr P.R.M.P Dilrukshi, Head, Science Communication and Outreach Division of NSF and Mrs Maduka Senarathne Senior Scientific Officer of the NSF were present at the event.

The Belt and Road Teenager Maker Camp & Teacher Workshop is held annually which is jointly organized by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and Ministry of Science and Technology aimed at students and science teachers to promote science education. This year camp will be held from 23 -29 July 2024 in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China.

The students participating for this programme will be able to engage in the projects that use high end technologies. Further, the programme includes several agenda items that directed towards improving students thinking abilities, creative thinking and broaden their understanding of new technologies and research and development work carried out by the other nations. This workshop also gives the opportunity for students to explore new research interests and provides a platform for testing their concepts and ideas with internationally recognized expert groups and work under their supervision. Sri Lankan students will also get an opportunity to work with students from other countries and share their knowledge, experience etc. The participation to the camp is a hardly ever and unique opportunity for the students as this type of an exposure is not available within Sri Lanka.

The participation to the Belt and Road Teacher Workshop will give an opportunity for teachers to have an understanding to improve their knowledge on modern technologies and getting hands on experience on emerging technologies, modern teaching methodologies in STEAM, exposure to new laboratories etc. Teachers can share new knowledge and experience gained through this workshop with their students and fellow teachers. Further, they will have the opportunity to strengthen cross-cultural teaching methods etc., with fellow teachers from different countries. While it will be a great opportunity for teachers to learn and expand their knowledge on different aspects of modern science, it will also be a motivation factor and appreciation for their outstanding work.
